One of the questions I'm asked most often is: "How much would you charge to clean my lounge carpet?"

The honest answer is that, without seeing the carpet, I can only give an estimate.

That's why I prefer to survey every carpet before providing a fixed written quotation. Unlike buying a product from a shop, professional carpet cleaning isn't a one-size-fits-all service. Every carpet is different, and several factors determine how long the job will take, the cleaning method required and, ultimately, the cost.

Access to Your Property

Before I even begin cleaning, practical considerations can affect the time required.

Can I park on your driveway, or will my van need to be some distance away? Is there easy access to electricity? Where can waste water be safely disposed of?

None of these things prevent the carpet from being cleaned, but they all influence the time needed to complete the job.

Appointments outside normal working hours, such as evenings or Saturdays, may also attract a higher charge because of the additional time involved.

The Carpet Itself

Not all carpets are made the same.

During a survey I'll identify the carpet's construction and fibre type. For example, a woven Axminster carpet requires a different approach from a tufted polypropylene carpet.

I'll also check that the carpet is securely fitted and look for any existing damage or areas that require particular care before any cleaning begins.

The Level of Soiling

A well-maintained carpet that is vacuumed regularly is usually straightforward to clean.

A carpet affected by pet accidents, coffee spills, food stains, marker pen or years of built-up soil is a very different proposition. These carpets often require additional stain treatments, specialist cleaning products and more time to achieve the best possible result.

No two carpets are ever identical.

Choosing the Right Cleaning Method

Once I have assessed the carpet, I can decide how it should be cleaned.

The fibre type, construction and level of soiling all influence the cleaning products and techniques that will produce the safest and most effective result.

Choosing the correct chemistry is equally important. Different carpet fibres and different stains require different cleaning products, which is why I always assess the carpet before deciding how to proceed.

The Size of the Job

The amount of carpet to be cleaned also affects the overall price.

Cleaning a single room often takes proportionally longer than cleaning an entire house because the travelling time, equipment setup and pack-away are much the same regardless of the size of the job.

As a result, the cost per square metre generally reduces as the amount of work increases.

Once I've seen the carpet, I can estimate how long the work will take, identify any specialist treatments that may be required and provide a fixed written quotation.

During my years cleaning carpets throughout South Warwickshire, I have found that no two jobs are ever exactly the same.

Although I can often provide a rough estimate over the phone, I much prefer to inspect the carpet first. It allows me to recommend the most appropriate cleaning method, provide an accurate quotation and ensure there are no unexpected surprises for either of us on the day of the clean.

A written survey also gives customers confidence that the price won't change unexpectedly and that the cleaning process has been tailored to their particular carpet rather than based simply on room size.
